Las actuaciones de este grupo de investigación muestran un enfoque aplicativo a la patología humana de manera que los trabajos experimentales tienden a esclarecer mecanismos que permitan diseñar estrategias terapéuticas para resolver enfermedades que afectan a la función de los sistemas sensoriales y motores. Se ha estudiado la participación de moléculas relacionadas con la plasticidad visual y la expresión de receptores de neurotransmisores del sistema del glutamato, en enfermedades como la ambliopía, en la que se intentará aplicar un refuerzo de la función de la corteza visual mediante estimulaciones. Los cambios de expresión de las moléculas antes citadas nos servirán de indicativo para valorar la recuperación visual.
Otra parte de la labor experimental propuesta va dirigida a recuperar la capacidad reactiva del sistema nervioso adulto lesionado. Para ello se recurrirá a moléculas inhibitorias de los genes que impiden la regeneración nerviosa. Estas moléculas se administrarán vehiculizadas por nanopartículas de polímeros biodegradables cuyo diseño y elaboración también se realizará dentro del trabajo correspondiente a las líneas expuestas.
